The term 'renewable energies' as used here includes measures to protect the environment, as well as sustainable use of natural resources. These issues are becoming more and more important within the rapidly developing ASEAN region, and offer small- and medium-sized technology companies from the West various opportunities for cooperation.
The Thai government’s ‘Alternative Energy Plan 2011-2015’ initiative can serve as a model for similar initiatives that exist in other countries of the ASEAN community. Within the framework of the initiative, the Thai government has set itself the target of increasing the proportion of renewable energies in 2025 to 20 percent.
Energy efficiency improvement in
Utilization of industrial wastes: heat, solid waste, waste water
Introduction of IT systems for energy management
Production of electricity from biomass and waste
Improvements in the production of biogas
Use of solar energy for
The above-mentioned areas of renewable energy offer huge opportunities for cooperation. It should be noted in this context that Thailand is the largest rubber producer and the third-largest palm oil producer. Malaysia, along with Indonesia, is the largest palm oil producer in the world. The resulting exploitable biomass amounts to several million tons per year. Their use for power generation is still in the early stages, and ways are being sought to allow more efficient energy production using biomass.
